Research Instruments for the Study: Museums and Inclusion: Understanding Visitors’ Sense of Belonging in Science and Natural History Museums

December 14th, 2024 | RESEARCH

The Museums and Inclusion study worked with 72 visitor groups (263 individuals) at four science/natural history museums across the United States. The individuals who visited brought a spectrum of identities and experiences, including participants from historically marginalized groups, particularly participants who identified as BIPOC, women, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities. This study also included groups that contained individuals with these identities and who were recent visitors to and/or members of the museum, as well as those who may not routinely visit museums. This qualitative research study used a photovoice methodology.

Included in this resource is:
- An Arrival Script, used to set visiting groups up with the photovoice task quickly, with minimal interruption to their visit, and to get them thinking about belonging without supplying leading information.
- A Post-visit Group Interview protocol, used to support visitors in honing in on the specific moments that impacted their sense of belonging during the visit, embedding a limited number of their own photos to discuss as a group.
- A Photo Selection/Demographic Form for participants to identify the photos they wanted to discuss, with sections collecting demographic information and perspectives on STEM interest, identity, and engagement. These forms are adapted for adults, teens (aged 13-17), and children (aged 6-12).

This resource also contains all research instruments with Spanish language translations.
