August 1st, 2023 - June 30th, 2028 | PROJECT
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), in partnership with Oregon MESA, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), the World Forestry Center (WFC), and AB Cultural Drivers (ABCD) is launching Wildfires and Human Health in a Changing Climate which aims to enhance public understanding of environmental health research, particularly the health impacts of severe wildfires.
Deliverables include a bilingual traveling exhibition, project website, and educators' guide. The content, focusing on current research into the health impacts of wildfires, will be presented in both Spanish and English to ensure accessibility for Spanish-preferring audiences. The development process will employ human-centered design, actively involving youth aged 11-17, particularly those underrepresented in STEM.
Objectives are to foster understanding of wildfire health impacts, promote health strategies to minimize risks of smoke exposure, and educate on how land use and climate change exacerbate wildfires. It will explore mitigation and adaptation strategies, with a focus on fire management and forest restoration.
A multidisciplinary team from MESA, OHSU, WFC, ABCD, and OMSI will collaborate to ensure the scientific accuracy and effective presentation of the content. The exhibition will include interactive elements, graphic panels, real objects, and personal stories from affected communities. After a 5-year development phase, the exhibition will tour nationally for eight years, aiming to reach over a million visitors.
