Trellis Live Online Discussion: Public Engagement Researcher-Practitioner Collaborations

October 30th, 2017

You’re invited to participate in an upcoming online discussion about public engagement researcher-practitioner collaboration. This will take place Tuesday, November 7 from 3:00-4:00pm ET on Trellis, the online communication platform for the scientific community, and will be text-based/in a comment thread; no talking, video, slides, etc.  Below is a little more information.  If you’re interested, you may request to join the Public Engagement with Science Group on Trellis if you’re not already part of the group (and if you have any questions, please direct them to Elana Kimbrell, ekimbrel@aaas.org).

Discussion description: In advance of the November 16 – 17 Sackler Colloquium on the Science of Science Communication, we’re holding a Trellis discussion about public engagement researcher-practitioner collaboration. This topic will be discussed at the colloquium as follow-up to one of the recommendations of the recent report, Communicating Science Effectively: A Research Agenda. Join us on Tuesday, November 7 from 3:00-4:00pm ET to discuss issues and opportunities of researcher-practitioner collaboration on public engagement. Bronwyn Bevan, head of the Research+Practice Collaboratory and Co-Principal Investigator for the Center for Advancement of Informal Science Education, and Brendan Nyhan from Dartmouth College, Liz Suhay from American University, and Emily Cloyd from AAAS, and representatives of two projects that received funding from the National Academies (supported by the Rita Allen Foundation), will join us. As this takes place in a comment thread, if you can’t join during the live chat portion, you may still view it and add your comments at any time afterward

We’ll be considering questions such as the following, as well as others posed by participants:

  • How do you find partners and pitch a project?
  • What are the benefits to both sides of collaborating?
  • Where do you find support and funding? How do you make the case to potential funders?

The AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science is using this group on Trellis to foster an online community for public engagement professionals – scientists, those researching public engagement, and the practitioners who facilitate engagement and translate public engagement research into practice. We are experimenting with ways to foster community across the many fields and interests that work on public engagement with science.  AAAS invites you to join!
