Abstract

This exploratory study examined the role that a specialized program at a large natural history museum could play in promoting science literacy among Latino parents from the surrounding urban neighborhood. The study specifically sought to determine if program participation both increased the six participants' understanding of scientific work as well as increase their comfort level in accessing the museum as a family learning resource. Data was collected through questionnaires and a modified DAST as well as informal discussion and interview. Findings suggest that participation in the program did result in an increased parental comfort level within the museum environment and understanding of scientific work.
