Digital Librarian / Collection Analyst

The Center for Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) works to support and connect the informal science education (ISE) field by building on the rich diversity of projects funded by the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Center generates, aggregates and disseminates resources for ISE practitioners, researchers and evaluators, STEM-based professionals and those who partner with and/or are new to the field. CAISE also provides connectivity to bridge the many forms in which informal STEM learning experiences are developed and delivered for audiences of all ages; furthers knowledge transfer between educational research and practice; supports wider participation in NSF-funded ISE work; and documents and characterizes the nature and impact of NSF’s investment in informal science education. The person in this position will join a highly motivated team of professionals working from the CAISE office at the Association of Science-Technology Centers located in downtown Washington, DC, and will report to the CAISE Director of Online Engagement for overall supervision and performance evaluation. Level: (Temporary, full-time, exempt)

Responsibilities Include

  • Conduct research on a range of topics related to informal stem education and learning in order to select appropriate materials for the informalscience.org collection.
  • Work with an advisory group comprised of the CAISE Co-PIs and directors and outside stakeholders and subject matter experts in order to index relevant content.
  • Review and index materials submitted to informalscience.org on an ongoing basis.
  • Index archived research and reference material records from the informalscience.org legacy site.
  • Assist with marketing the informalscience.org collection, e.g. outreach to the field and production of information briefs.
  • Assist in the development of collection policies and maintenance of cataloging best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Travel: Travel required to CAISE meetings, ASTC conference, and other meetings as requested. Supervisory responsibilities: None.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in education, library or information science, or related science field. Advanced degree or 5+ years experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years experience working in an academic or digital library setting.
  • Experience working in start up initiatives and/or programs in the sciences or academia.
  • Demonstrated skills acquiring and indexing records to assist in the discovery of material.
  • Ability to develop the collection and acquire materials according to accepted themes.
  • Professional demeanor and demonstrated experience working with content advisory boards and multiple subject matter experts.
  • Strong computer skills, experience working with collection management systems and content management systems highly desirable.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to manage multiple projects.
