Hi’ilani Shibata, born and raised in Hilo on the island of Hawai’i, enjoys sharing about her Hawaiian heritage. With a degree in Hawaiian Language from the University of Hawai’i, her experience in hula, chant, and storytelling, Hi’ilani treasures disseminating the uniqueness of Hawai’i all over the world. She has learned the Polynesian navigating star constellations, voyaging stories, and astronomy through her work at the Bishop Museum as well as at the Hawai’i Maritime Center. Presently, the Education Operations Manager of the Bishop Museum, Hi’ilani has held various positions throughout the museum structure, including planning and opening the satellite Bishop Museum at Kälia at the Hilton Hawaiian village during the years of 2000-2006. She has also participated in a variety of youth programs involving not only youth of Hawai’i, but around the nation. Her most current initative is establishing a structured youth career pathways program that will collaborate with institutions around the nation and world.
