Professional Bio

John is currently an assistant professor at Oregon State University in the Free-Choice Learning program. His duties include coordinating the online Masters program.



John's background in science education comes as an eighth grade science teacher, instructional designer, and educational researcher. For his graduate work he lead two design teams, a virtual high school based on a one-to-one mentoring model (Dr. Priscilla Norton) and a online learning environment, called GO Inquire, that supports fourth grade inquiry in geological observation. He has recently earned his Ph.D. at George Mason University. His dissertation is titled Exploring the Assessment of Geological Observation with Design Research.


He is co-editor of the Handbook of Design Research Methods in Education: Innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Learning and Teaching.
