Summary

FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman, a children’s television series produced by WGBH since 2005, is a competition-based game/reality show for 6-10 year-old children that includes both animation and live action footage. During the third season of FETCH, as a part of the outreach program, WGBH developed the Ruff Guide to Science. This resource contains science challenges, leader notes, book resources, optional instructions to run a FETCH Club, and a career game called Help Wanted. It was disseminated to more than a thousand libraries around the country. Goodman Research Group, Inc. (GRG), a research firm specializing in the evaluation of educational programs, materials, and services, served as the external evaluator for the summative evaluation of this library outreach component.

GRG collected data from the librarians in two waves. During the first wave of data collection 171 librarians responded to an online survey. Thirty-eight of these librarians had used the Guide. During the second wave, 207 librarians participated in the survey. Out of those, 52 had used the Ruff Guide. On the survey, the librarians who had not used the Guide reported their reasons for not doing so and those who had used the Guide answered questions about their usage and their reactions to the Guide.
